Munsell Colour Science and Natural Colour Systems were created to present a system that assist companies in the colour industry to add security to individuals’ colour choices.

  1. Choose the eye depth from the grey scale to match the depth of an eye colour – *Harmonise.
  2. Move 3 depths darker or lighter to get the contrasting colours – *Contrast.
  3. All other shades are *Intente.

This provides the same chromatic balance by the same scientific elements as choosing the depth initially.  Intente indicates the ability of humans to find the intuitive match of *Harmonise or *Contrast colour schemes.

Which started off as the 18 colour grey scale evaluation that natural colour systems uses, Shades of Soul still manages to maintain the same results as the original basic 18 basic eye colours that were standardised to 9.  It sounds simplistic but how it influences the holistic well-being of any person and company, brings the *Harmony to this new system.

Cornel gradually started Shades of Soul in the early 1990’s with Redken Hair Care Systems, that are based on categorising  people into 2 major groups, ‘Warm’ and ‘Cool’ undertone.

It soon became evident, through thousands of case studies, that there are numerous border cases that don’t fall in either group but rather float between the warm and cool.  What was most fascinating was that individuals that were analysed a while back had changed from for example warm to cool and vice versa.  Research indicated that a person’s carbon and amino acid balance change with age and hormones also affect the melanin of skin and hair.

Colour Me Beautiful provided a very handy commercial version where individuals could use around 12-16 primary and secondary shades to work with when choosing colours to wear. The science behind it proved that there was a certain amount of well-being established by following their prescribed analysis.

Taken in consideration that an individual changes undertone as they age or become tired, wearing only a restricted few shades, one realises that the above mentioned will not serve a long term holistic purpose.  Which was meant to be scientifically proven effects of colour frequencies, were not bringing a person closer to their own intuitional colour choices.

Other analyses became apparent with more secondary and tertiary shades, in order to allow for more creativity for the individual, and with more acceptable choices between colours. These secondary approaches allowed more dramatic eye colour differences and would often be described as specific physical eye colour characteristics when creating colour records for an individual. They might look at physical properties like a defined darker ring of colour around the coloured part of the eyes. These types could use more dramatic depths of colour differences.

What was recognised in the 90’s as dramatic, natural, classic and romantic were now broadened with a more commercial approach by adding ‘creative’ and ‘city chic’ categories. The general public would get a more valued and wider range to work with and choices were made a lot wider from a primary and complimentary point of view.  It was still not taking in consideration that skin undertone changes and a rigid combination can be exhausted in years to follow.
